The International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) run an annual student assessment competition. Each year they release five brief's varying in topic, with the desired outcome being a typographic response to your chosen theme.

My chosen brief for this project was 'Power', which I interpreted through the lens of 'the power of patriarchy'. This project allowed me to examine my own relationship and experiences of patriarchy and those of other women, through collating studies and conducting interviews. Gathering feedback during development, a female audience connected almost instantly to the designs whereas men struggled to understand the message of the 'female experience'. This lead me to also interview men of different demographics and backgrounds, gaining further understanding on their experiences.

The patriarchal impacts felt by men are similarly detrimental, however I found the men experiencing it some-what unaware, believing it to be a 'woman's issue'. Within the development process, a much larger audience and impact began to reveal itself, the scope of the project naturally expanding into a broader comment on how patriarchy harms all members of society. The final outcome became an informative, educational campaign designed to work together whilst also targeting different audiences, the concept being to inform and foster greater community, with the understanding that this isn't the issue of a particular demographic, but all of us.
