Zine Experiment

For this project, we were asked to produce a graphic outcome, but the design process itself had to be routed in physical creation mediums like illustration, printing, photography, among others. We were tasked with creating some form of physical piece that could then be built upon and enhanced digitally. In my research I discovered the work of Helen Musselwhite, a Handsome Frank illustrator and designer, and her process of creating design work for various large clients. She uses paper and cutouts to construct her desired shapes or scenes, layering them above each other but leaving space to allow natural depth and shadows to show through in the work. I found this process really interesting and unique, and I found that it added a particular feeling to the piece that was irreplicable digitally. I conducted a shoot with a friend in the photography studio to create a silhouette base of a head, and transferred this onto various pieces of colored card to create cut outs.  We had previously used ink printing in other projects, so I wanted to use this effect to layer and overlap text inside a brain to visually represent the feeling of my piece. After constructing and photographing the original physical piece, I enhanced it digitally and added different magazine headlines that were contemporary and recent topics.
